A brief advice concerning the nature of today’s internet landscape, one in which participation is encouraged by current information-funnelling technologies such as Twitter, YouTube etc. The Salafī student of knowledge is one who listens, reads and learns. However, the internet today is driven by platforms which encourage participation and the constant flow of information (we will discuss the reasons for this at another juncture). In this regard, one can feel left out if he/she is not tweeting, youtube-ing, blogging etc. Is blogging and spreading information about Islām for everyone? Does it inhibit time spent studying? Abū Khadījah offers some advice in this regard.

The web 2.0 broad shift to prosumerism has had an impact on the salafī community as well. Where traditional forms of communication were one-to-many media (i.e. live lectures, radio, television), the shift to self-broadcasting and self-publishing has encouraged production and consumption (prosumerism). So anyone with a social media account can copy-and-paste the works of others or clip them and create their own daʿwah platform on-the-fly.

This brings with it the potential for trials and problems for the daʿwah. Over time, the increased subscriber base creates an illusion of need, to continue to feed viewers with content. It shifts the daʿwah from students of knowledge and Islamic centres to popular and hyperactive bloggers who spam-blast content that's already existing.

Whether this is well-intended or not is of little consequence to the reality that it can reposition the portals of daʿwah. What's more alarming is that, without careful consideration to how the daʿwah is presented, the techniques to increase traffic and visibility that are employed by mainstream social media influencers are often shoe-horned into the salafī daʿwah space. Some of these approaches such as 'bro's podcasts' and tabloid-esque shorts that speak about current affairs, may differ greatly with the mode and approach of the scholars.

For those who truly wish to aid the daʿwah and have both the time and the requisite skills to assist, they should seek to volunteer with established centres and/or students so they can reap the rewards whilst not bearing the responsibility for the topics, approaches and mode of presentation.
