Anatomy of a Post | Interview with Petter Holme about his blog petterhol.me/blog

Join us for an in-depth discussion with Petter Holme, renowned for his influential blog on complexity science. In this interview, Petter discusses his motivations and the sustained effort required to manage a sophisticated science blog. He reflects on the beginnings of his blogging journey, the evolution of his content, and the decision-making process behind choosing blog posts over formal research papers.

Throughout the conversation with Abbas Rizi, Petter shares insights into the feedback he receives from readers, the unintended academic uses of his blog posts, and his views on the future of science communication in an increasingly digital world.

This dialogue also covers practical aspects for academics considering starting their own blogs, including Petter's personal approach to writing and managing content and the tools and resources that have been indispensable to him. Whether you're an academic, a student, or simply interested in the convergence of science communication and Complexity Science, this interview provides a thoughtful perspective on the impact and challenges of blogging in the scientific community. Join Petter Holme as he shares his experiences and advice for integrating blogging into professional scientific communication.

Where do the boundaries of physics begin and end? The debate has persisted for more than a century.

The theoretical physicists Freeman Dyson and Steven Weinberg have both used the phrase “not respectable” to describe how cosmology was seen by physicists around 1960. The subject was simply “not physics.”

The boundaries of a discipline bear directly on the opportunities departments can offer students. They also influence those students’ evolving identities as physicists, and on how they think about their own professional futures and the future of physics.

Which links matter most? Sparsifying epidemic models with effective resistance, Cristopher Moore:

https://youtu.be/Ln_CIhxV840

Network science has increasingly become central to the field of epidemiology. However, many networks derived from modern datasets are not just large, but dense, with a high average degree. One way to reduce the computational cost of simulating epidemics on these networks is sparsification, where a subset of edges is selected and reweighted based on some measure of their importance. Following recent work in computer science, we find that the most accurate approach uses the effective resistances of edges, which can be computed from the graph Laplacian. The resulting sparse network preserves both the local and global behavior of the SIR model, including the probability each node becomes infected and its distribution of arrival times. This holds even when the sparse network preserves less than 10% of the edges of a mobility network from the United States. Our work helps illuminate which links of a network are most important to disease spread. Defining edge importance using purely topological methods, or by thresholding edge weights, does not perform nearly as well.
I have several open shorter-term #postdoc positions in my lab that focus on the intersection of networks, artitficial intelligence and biodiversity. Some of these would be particularly suitable for people with Bio backgrounds, others are more Physicsy. DM me if interested: thilo2gross@gmail.com
Entropy, irreversibility and inference at the foundations of statistical physics

https://www.nature.com/articles/s42254-024-00720-5

Statistical physics relates the properties of macroscale systems to the distributions of their microscale agents. Its central tool has been the maximization of entropy, an equilibrium variational principle. Recent work has sought extensions to non-equilibria: across processes of change both fast and slow, in the Jarzynski equality and fluctuation relations and other tools of stochastic thermodynamics, using large deviation theory or others. When recognized as an inference principle, entropy maximization can be generalized for non-equilibria and applied to path entropies rather than state entropies, becoming the principle of maximum caliber, which we emphasize in this Review. Our primary goal is to enhance crosstalk among researchers working in disparate silos, comparing and contrasting different approaches while pointing to common roots.

FOUNDATIONAL PAPERS IN COMPLEXITY SCIENCE

Foundational Papers in Complexity Science maps the development of complex-systems science through eighty-eight revolutionary works originally published between 1922 and 2000. Curated by SFI President David C. Krakauer, each seminal paper is introduced and placed into its historical context, with enduring insights discussed by leading contemporary complexity scientists.

These four volumes are a product of collective intelligence. More than a compilation, Foundational Papers represents large-scale collaboration within the SFI community—brilliant thinkers who have contextualized the work that shaped their own research, resulting in a sparkling demonstration of how complexity shatters the usual scientific divisions and a look back at the path we’ve followed in order to gain a clearer view of what lies ahead.
