Who is your Lord?"

"He is the One who gives life and death."

"I give life and cause death," claimed Nimrod. Ibrahim asked him how he gave life and death. In response Nimrod, the accursed, summoned two prisoners who had been sentenced to death. He put one of them to death and set the other free.

Ibrahim told Nimrod, "If what you claim is true, bring back to life the one whom you have killed. And my Lord causes the sun to rise from the east, you bring it out from the west."

The infidel was speechless and vanquished
Imam (a) was poisoned by al-Mansur al-Dawaniqi .He was buried in the al-Baqi' Cemetery beside his father, Imam al-Baqir (a), his grandfather Imam al-Sajjad (a) and his uncle Imam al-Hasan (a)

The last years of Imam al-Sadiq's (a) life coincided with the rule of al-Mansur. Imam (a) was hugely influential as a spiritual figure among Banu Hashim. Imam's popularity was increasing all over the Islamic territories. Knowledgeable men and scholars often came to meet him and they held discussions and asked him their questions. The influence of Imam (a) concerned al-Mansur. As a result, he summoned Imam (a) to Baghdad to keep a close eye on him; he even thought of martyring Imam (a). Al-Sayyid b. Tawus stated in his book Muhaj al-da'awat wa manhaj al-'ibadat that al-Mansur regularly summoned Imam al-Sadiq (a) to Baghdad and Kufa.

Imam al-Sadiq (a) usually refused to go to al-Mansur's palace, expect on some occasions; al-Mansur mostly complained about rejections he got from Imam (a). When he complained to Imam (a) about his infrequent visits to his palace, Imam replied: "I have done nothing to be afraid of you, and your deeds in this world do not make me optimistic about your situation in the Hereafter. Your current situation is nothing delightful to congratulate you; you do not regard it a misery to offer my condolences to you; then why should I come to visit you?"

Al-Mansur held grudges against Alids and tried very hard to keep a close eye on Imam al-Sadiq (a); he did not let Imam (a) to live freely. On the other hand, Imam (a), just like his fathers, openly considered himself as the Imam of Muslims and believed others have usurped the power by force. It brought dangers to al-Mansur. Then he was looking for the right time to martyr Imam (a).

He considered Imam al-Sadiq (a) a major obstacle in his way and it is said he took an oath to kill Imam (a). Eventually Imam al-Sadiq (a) was martyred on Shawwal 25, 148/December 14, 765 According to Ibn Shahrashub in al-Manaqib, Imam (a) was poisoned by al-Mansur.

حرق دار الامام الصادق عليه السلام
لمّا أمر المنصور الدوانيقي عامله على المدينة أنْ يحرق على أبي عبد الله الصادق (ع) داره، فجاءوا بالحطب الجزل ووضعوه على باب دار الصادق (ع) وأضرموا فيه النار ، فلمّا أخذت النار ما في الدهليز تصايحنَ العلويات داخل الدار وارتفعت أصواتهم، فخرج الإمام الصادق (ع) وعليه قميص وإزار وفي رجليه نعلان وجعل يخمد النار ويطفئ الحريق حتّى قضى عليها، فلمّا كان الغد دخل عليه بعض شيعته يسلّونه فوجدوه حزيناً باكياً، فقالوا: ممّن هذا التأثر والبكاء، أمِنْ جرأة القوم عليكم أهل البيت وليس منهم بأوّل مرة؟ فقال الإمام (ع): “لا ، ولكن لمّا أخذت النار ما في الدهليز، نظرت إلى نسائي وبناتي يتراكضن في صحن الدار من حجرة إلى حجرة، ومن مكان إلى مكان هذا وأنا معهن في الدار، فتذكّرت روع عيال جدّي الحسين (ع) يوم عاشوراء لمّا هجم القوم عليهنَّ ، ومناديهم ينادي: أحرقوا بيوت الظالمين.

When al-Mansur ordered his assistant in Medina to burn the house of Abu Abdullah al-Sadiq (as), they prepared the firewood and placed it on the door of al-Sadiq (as) and set it to fire. And when the fire reached the corridor, the women inside the house screamed, and their voices rose. So, Imam al-Sadiq (as) came out whilst wearing a shirt, azar (garment wrapping the lower body), and shoes, and he was quenching and extinguishing the fire until he put it off.
The next day, some of his followers visited him to entertain him, so they saw him sorrowful and crying, they said: What is the reason behind your crying, is it because of the audacity of the people against you and your household, it isn’t there first time (to have done this)? The Imam (as) said: “No, but when the fire reached the corridor, I looked at my women and daughters running in the courtyard of the house from room to room, and from place to place, this happened whilst I was with them in the house. So, I remembered the horror the children of my grandfather al-Hussain (as) experienced on the Day of Ashura when the people attacked them, and their (opposition) caller called: Burn the homes of the oppressors!“
The excellence of Al-Sadiq He said: Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Musa ibn Babawayh al-Qummi, may Allah bless him with mercy, reported to me from his father, who reported from Muhammad ibn Abul Qasim, from Ahmad ibn Abu Abdillah al-Barqi, from his father, from the one who heard from Hannan ibn Sadir al-Sayrafi, who said: I dreamt and saw the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his progeny, with a bowl before him covered with a cloth. I came closer to him and greeted him, and he returned my greetings. Then he removed the cloth from the bowl, which was filled with fresh dates. He began to eat from it, so I went closer still and said: "O messenger of Allah, may I have one?" He gave me one, which I ate. Then I requested for another one, and he gave and I ate. This way, just as I ate one, I went on requesting for another till he gave me eight of them. As I ate the last, I asked for more, but he said: "Enough for you." He said: I woke up from my dream. Next day, I visited al-Sadiq Ja'far ibn Muhammad, peace be upon him, and before him was a bowl covered with cloth, the same way as I had previously seen in my dream, before the Prophet. So I greeted him and he returned my greetings, then he uncovered the bowl, which was filled with fresh dates. He began to eat, and I felt surprised. I said: "May I be your ransom, could I have one?" He gave one to me, which I ate. Then I requested for another and he gave. And so I went on asking for another till he gave me eight. Then I asked for more, so he said: "If my grandfather, the Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny, had given more, I would have also given." So I related to him the dream. قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مُوسَى بْنِ بَابَوَيْهِ الْقُمِّيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ سَمِعَ حَنَانَ بْنَ سَدِيرٍ الصَّيْرَفِيَّ يَقُولُ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ طَبَقٌ مُغَطًّى بِمِنْدِيلٍ فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ وَ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ ثُمَّ كَشَفَ الْمِنْدِيلَ عَنِ الطَّبَقِ فَإِذَا فِيهِ رُطَبٌ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَاوِلْنِي رُطَبَةً فَنَاوَلَنِي وَاحِدَةً فَأَكَلْتُهَا ثُمَّ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَاوِلْنِي أُخْرَى فَنَاوَلَنِيهَا فَأَكَلْتُهَا وَ جَعَلْتُ كُلَّمَا أَكَلْتُ وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُ أُخْرَى حَتَّى أَعْطَانِي ثَمَانَ رُطَبَاتٍ فَأَكَلْتُهَا ثُمَّ طَلَبْتُ مِنْهُ أُخْرَى فَقَالَ لِي حَسْبُكَ- قَالَ فَانْتَبَهْتُ مِنْ مَنَامِي فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الصَّادِقِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ طَبَقٌ مُغَطًّى بِمِنْدِيلٍ كَأَنَّهُ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُهُ فِي الْمَنَامِ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ ص فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ ثُمَّ كَشَفَ عَنِ الطَّبَقِ فَإِذَا فِيهِ رُطَبٌ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ فَعَجِبْتُ لِذَلِكَ وَ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ نَاوِلْنِي رُطَبَةً- فَنَاوَلَنِي فَأَكَلْتُهَا ثُمَّ طَلَبْتُ أُخْرَى فَنَاوَلَنِي فَأَكَلْتُهَا وَ طَلَبْتُ أُخْرَى حَتَّى أَكَلْتُ ثَمَانَ رُطَبَاتٍ ثُمَّ طَلَبْتُ مِنْهُ أُخْرَى فَقَالَ لِي لَوْ زَادَكَ جَدِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لَزِدْنَاكَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ الْخَبَرَ فَتَبَسَّمَ تَبَسُّمَ عَارِفٍ بِمَا كَانَ. الامالی للشیخ المفید ج۱ ص ۳۳۵ بحارج۴۷ ص ۶۳
Imam al-Sadiq (a) has had a high place in the eyes of Sunni scholars. Abu Hanifa, one of the prominent Sunni leaders, considered the Imam as the most knowledgeable Muslim and the greatest jurist among them.According to Ibn Abi l-Hadid, great Sunni scholars such as Abu Hanifa, Ahmad b. Hanbal, and al-Shafi'i were directly or indirectly the students of Imam al-Sadiq (a).
